The Blue Whitetail

For more than 20 years, a lot of brilliant black and white photographic negatives have been collecting dust. All that ends today. With the launch of The Blue Whitetail, hundreds of past and current photos that have been in limbo for years are finally going to brought to life. Chris has been diligently and systematically going back through his negatives and digitizing his strongest pieces, one by one. It's a Herculean effort but one that is well worth it. Allowing photographs such as the one above (which is a new work, titled 'Circle of White'- 2011) to go unseen, is criminal at the very least.

I invite all Ooh La La readers to check out this new blog and become followers. It will not disappoint. I promise :)

I turned 40 yesterday....Gulp. Funny thing is I feel exactly like I did on Monday when I was 39! Well, except for my lapse in memory thing this morning.....Here are a few things that have helped to "ease" my mind about venturing into a new decade of life....I realized later I ended up getting things that all relate to the hand/wrist. Kinda strange.... And the whole time I'm looking into buying a hand creme, I can hear my mom in the background telling me to moisturize! moisturize! moisturize! my hands...because you can tell a lot about someone's age from their hands! :)

Hello all! Every post of mine should start with" I'm so sorry I haven't posted in a very long while".....but I'll forgo that and just jump right in!

I've slowly started to only buy striped shirts lately... At first it wasn't even a conscious effort, but then I started noticing that all the pieces I really seemed to like were of the stripe variety....

And I've gone and done it yet again.... I bought another striped top. I think this is my "new" thing this year. A bit quirky...a bit...boring maybe?

This is huge for me, since I usually stick to black, grey and navy....

So we'll see how this goes....Oh, last thing... I like my stripes narrow...no wide ones for moi.

Guess what?!? Today is KJ's birthday...and it's a bit of a milestone one at that :) There are really no words to describe how very dear KJ is to me. KJ is beautiful, fascinating, generous, caring, brilliant and hilarious. I say this pretty much every year but I'll say it again...I don't know how I got so lucky to have a friend like KJ, but I sure am glad I did. It seems only fitting that on a blog (which KJ statrted!!) devoted to our favorite things, we should have a post on some of KJ's most favorite things. Love you KJ...always and always! Le Creuset. Enough said. My small 'French' (Dutch) oven was lovely but I needed to upgrade in size. Enter 5 1/2 quart Le Creuset in Casis (you all know how I feel about that 'eggplant' color). I've had it 2 days...I've already used it for 2 meals. You already know they aren't cheap...but did you also know they are worth every single penny? The only problem now is that I want to replace all my kitchen utensils with Le Creuset.

Sigh...super-love :)

Victor Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz

The 2011 football season has been kind of a gigantic disappointment...well, for me at least. The 'Skins were 5-11 (ugh), the Steelers were way better but got bounced from the very first wildcard game and now well, the Superbowl is around the corner and 2 of my least favorite teams are playing. Kind of a bummer...but you know, it's football and I will always find a reason to pick a team to root for...and this time...that reason is Giant's receiver Victor Cruz. A couple years ago, Cruz was an undrafted, free agent...now he's one of the major reasons the Giants are even in the Superbowl. But spectacular clutch catches aren't the only reason to watch this delightful star...root for him to score 'cause his victory dance of choice? The salsa...and it's one of the most fun things to watch in the game today.

And you know I can't resist the temptation to post other awesome football dances...like Ickey Woods famous 'Ickey Shuffle' (pick it up at 55 seconds...so fantastic). And of course, the infamous Chicago Bears Superbowl Shuffle. Holy heck...I even knew all the words to this one. Only a dominant team that demolished opponents could get away with this ridiculousness...and they did...on both counts :)

You know what irks me to no end...that I can't do what I love doodle, Gemma Correll, and Caitlin McGauley do. I don't really want to be a singer, or an actress, or a dancer (though a day as a ballerina might be pretty amazing) but I would love to be able to sketch...to draw...to paint. I am so very jealous of these talented entities. Each so different, but each with the ability to make me smile and make me sigh, every single day. Ooh La La readers are already so familiar with their work. It makes its way to this blog regularly. I ask you...with beautiful watercolors, adorable designs and humor to boot...how on earth can we resist.

You've heard the name, but pretty soon you'll be able to get up close and personal (well, sort of) to the man...the myth...the legend :) Yes, Chris is entering the wonderful world of blogging. On February 1, 2012, we are launching The Blue Whitetail, a site that will be devoted to Chris' past and current fine art photographs. Chris graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Fine Art Photography in 1983. After a series of events (called 'life') which forced him to stop and start his photography career, he is back in full swing. 'The Blue Whitetail' will be a chance for many of us who have been waiting patiently, to finally see work that has not been viewed in 20 years. In addition to tackling his massive back log, Chris is also going digital...stepping away from the dark room and toward scanners et al. I am, in a word...thrilled.

It seems the whole world is on Greece these days. Well, how can you blame them, right? Government and politics aside, I have always felt that if you give Greeks the incentive, they will always come through. Case in point...Eleava. The Dieline has a fabulous post about the gorgeous packing this little Greek company designed for the running of the 29th Athens Classic Marathon (truthfully, the ancient roots of this marathon course go back 2500 years and is where we get the standard marathon distance athletes have been running since...but I digress).

Updating the ubiquitous and beautiful classic runners we've all seen on those ancient urns and vases, this 'logo', according to the Dieline, was designed to highlight a 'pattern-like continuity' is nothing short of brilliant. Whether standing alone, or amongst other bottles, the design is completely fluid. A gorgeous and modern tribute to perhaps one of the most recognizable designs in history.

I'm absolutely loving this project she did in Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn, NY. The idea was to make public how much people are paying for their apartments to illustrate a little-known fact: What the market value of your shoebox really is. Golden Globes et al

Hi kids! If you are working out there...and I know you are...'cause I'm in there too, I hope your week is getting off to a smooth and wonderful start. I may have picked the perfect weekend to be battling a cold, because it was one of those occasions where everything I was interested in was going on in other places. Football and Golden Globes ruled the weekend and with frigid temps up here, I used the time to hibernate, try to kick this incredibly stubborn cold, work around the house and catch all that was going on in the NFL...not to mention Hollywood.

So speaking of which....did you watch the spectacle? Honestly, it always amazes me how a roomful of some of the richest, most celebrated and allegedly talented people in their field, can sound like such complete and utter morons in the, more than ample time, they are give to say 'thank you'. Hmm...let's run them down, shall we? Meryl Streep...shut up...just shut up. Apparently you desperately need a script not to sound like an idiot. George Clooney...if you are the heir apparent to the role of leading man in Hollywood, then how about taking a cue from great leading men of the past. You know elegant men like Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, to name a few. Just a hint but they probably never gave a thank-you speech that involved a reference to another actors private parts. Truly unbelievable. Thank goodness for the cast and crew of the The Artist, who gave one gracious and adorable speech after another. Proving that you can do no wrong with a French accent, even the little dog was more impressive and well-behaved than these other so-called stars.

Then, of course, there was the incredibly darling, absolutely lovely and beautifully humble Michelle Williams. She saved the night for me...from her gorgeous Jason Wu gown...to that fabulous hair...to the thank you speech to her daughter. She tugged at my heart strings in every way.

An Equal Playing Field

Readers of ooh la la will know that I'm fascinated with design of all kinds, including design that serves a bigger purpose than just looking pretty. Gordon and Maggie Hartman created a playground in San Antonio, Texas that can be enjoyed by all kids, even those with special needs. Among many accommodating design features, the swings and the carousel are made to fit wheelchairs. It's absolutely genius and I hope the idea catches on in more places. My hats off to the Hartmans!

NFL Playoffs, MMA, Gilbert & Sullivan ... and Friday the 13th

Well, this weekend is off to an auspicious beginning (after all, Friday really is pre-weekend., don't you think?) First of all, it is Friday the 13th, which I didn't notice until I pulled my phone out, while sitting in a massive, snow-related backup on my way to work. Hmmm...well, if you judged Friday the 13th by the weather, then every day in Rochester from November to April is the dreaded day. But I arrived safely at the library and I suppose that's all that matters :)

Such oddness on tap this weekend...including taking down my Christmas tree (which I told Chris, back in Novemberr that I would cry when I had to do...it's just too beautiful!), MMA pay per view event, 4 potentially AWESOME football games and a Gilbert and Sullivan play a friend from work is performing in :) Well, I don't get the randomness, but bring it on!

Since we are talking weekend, you know I love a great article of blog post on what to wear. Refinery 29 has some fantastic ideas. I have been in such a rut of Old Navy yoga pants (which really are fabulous, by the way) and monkey fur jackets that these outfits have me rather inspired to be a little more Ooh La La!

So you were all probably wondering how the brilliant folks over at Kate Spade would top their 'action packed' 'Color a month' campaign from 2011. Well, keeping the anticipation going...2012 has been christened 'The Year of Pattern'. Genius, no?! I would be head-over-heels for this idea except just look at the pattern they decided to start with...why it's stripes of course. Oh Kate Spade...you are officially the single coolest company on the planet.

And while we're on the subject of my obsession with Kate Spade, just look at the smashing new 'In The Pink' bangle bracelet that was part of my Christmas package from KJ. Love it so much!

Images of the Jason Wu collection for Target are slowly but surely making their way out and about. Have you seen them? The collection seems very pretty...very Jason Wu...even though I have to admit...shorts skirts and bobby socks is not a look I'll be wearing anytime soon. I do love this scarf with Milu and there are certainly lots of stripey things to make me more than a little excited. So of course I'll be scouring the store in early February checking out the goods.

Now I ask you...after the Missoni debacle, are you willing to give Target a second chance managing a new collection. Granted, Jason Wu is no Missoni but who knows what can happen. I might be biased since I didn't go Missoni mad but I say, get in there an check it out. This is what shopping is all about!

I spent the last week in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale and, first, before I write about this absolutely gorgeous parking structure, can I just mention how much I LOVE art deco? I love that it spans Rockefeller Center in NYC and the chicest Florida hotels. Really, it's my favorite design genre. Now, back to the parking structure. Can you imagine a cooler place to park your car? I saw it and just couldn't stop staring. I would consider moving to Miami and buying a car just so I could use it. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. See more pics here.

Fun-filled, football weekend

So close to the end of the first work week of 2012 and I have one thing on my mind...Wildcard weekend!!! My 'Skins are out (5-11...ugh...what a year) but the Steelers are still in and I'm looking forward to a couple days of some super battles. Last year, around this time, GQ magazine published a list of the '25 Coolest Athletes'. It would be hard to argue the cool factor for anyone of the men who made that list...though 'Broadway Joe' Namath certainly would have gotten my vote for No. 1 bad ass. Here's my top picks...

He might be controversial, but anyone who beats a stage-4 cancer and then wins the most grueling event in sports 7 times is a major bad ass. Period.

OK, Roger Federer may not be your classic bad ass...but he is pretty darn cool

Going with controversial again...for those of you who like to hate on 'Big Ben' Roethlisberger...well, you just aren't paying attention to the game. No one makes the game (or the off season) more exciting than the unstoppable quarterback. Bad ass? Without question.

And last but not least, in a sport (MMA) stacked with bad asses...no can top George St. Pierre. Coolness personified inside and out of the cage.

These days, I really need a good reason to read. As a super avid reader most of my life, it's funny to feel less than inspired. That said, there are still books out there that leave me breathless. Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler (or Lemony Snicket to you young adult readers out there) and amazingly gorgeous illustrations by the brilliant Maira Kalman is a must read. And if my word isn't enough, Handler himself said this about the book via the tumblr, The Why We Broke Up Project

All that's new at JCrew

With the holidays behind us we can all begin to officially think about ... spring! Well, not really. I mean, even though it (thankfully) hasn't been very harsh, winter-wise, here in Upstate, it is 14 degrees and snowy today. And with at least 2-3 more months of this stuff to go...spring is a very very distant dream. Still, I love that JCrew is thinking ahead. And I'm loving the looks...like this oh so preppy style above...complete with Sperry Topsiders in a bunch of cool colors.

Ever since I wore those shaker knit sweaters to death in the early 80's, I haven't been able to look at a style that even remotely resembles it. This sweater has me rethinking that attitude. Love it so much.

Beautiful ballet flats in so many wonderful colors can only mean one thing...spring...you can't be far off now :)

Ready or not...here it is! 2012 is officially here and I hope you all had a great time seeing in the new year. Chris was really under the weather so we stayed in and kept it low key. Of course our traditional sushi dinner was as delicious and fabulous as ever.

And just what do you think arrived in the mail on Dec.31...why my very own gold Starbucks card. It's now official...I am a Starbucks addict :)

Looking back on one heck of a year - 2011 redux

I don't know if I can speak for my fellow Ooh La La colleagues (KJ and JP :) when I say that I love a good year end wrap up. We all joke when this time of year rolls around...you've heard the mantra...'man, that year flew by'. But when you sit back and take stock, a whole heck of a lot happens in a year. When I look back on my year...and another year of Ooh La La Du Jour, well, I can't help but remember all that made it pretty darn amazing. It's All About The Light

I've long had in my mind various markers for success. If I see a piano in someone's home, for example, that to me is a sign that the person has made enough money that they not only could afford a piano, but could afford to have the thing moved into their apartment. (No easy feat in NYC!) What else separates the haves from the have-nots? Good lighting. fab.com is selling some gorgeous lighting floor lights right now and I want ALL of them. (If you can believe it, readers, what lights up my bedroom is one bare light bulb.) Give me some time to save up some money for these beautiful lamps and then, yes, I'll be ready for my close-up.

LOVE this story on the iconic LL Bean Boot ... always a hit with hunters, fisherman and anyone else who has to slog through muck (you know you love 'em upstate New Yorkers). Now, retro-popularity has made them the must have on college campuses too.

People, I've had mine for YEARS...they are as awesome as ever. Others come and go...but none compare so my shearling-lined beauties. If you don't own a pair...you soon will :)

A funny thing happened to me this week. Yesterday I was giving some thought to my favorite musical divas and I was wondering who was due for a comeback. Gloria Estefan, someone I've not thought about for a LONG time, popped into my head and I thought to myself, "It's about time for her to release an album." Lo and behold, I was scanning the Billboard charts today and who should pop up on it, but Ms. Estefan! And, let me tell you, I can't get enough of this song. If you're going to play it, get ready to turn up the music and dance.

Merry merry post-Christmas kids! I hope everyone had a lovely holiday weekend. Mine, well, it is was the best. I told Chris that there was no way I could be melancholy about Christmas being over (which I always am...just a bit) because I had such a lovely time. On Christmas eve, we had a fabulous dinner and took our traditional drive around town to check out the neighborhood Christmas lights. One street in Henrietta, NY was particularly spectacular and may have made my year. There was music, and each every house, including the one decked out for Hannukah was totally over the top...i.e. incredible! Bless these awesome folks for having so much holiday spirit!

Christmas morning brought a delicious french toast breakfast and present opening.

Chris had my adorable strawberryluna print framed :) Love.

Of course the best thing about the holidays is giving gifts. Laura is one the most fun people to give gifts too. She appreciates everything, right down to the wrapping. Here is my Christmas box 'o gifts to her.

Vincent, my boyfriend, is always making fun of me because I'm constantly running doomsday scenarios in my head. I can't help it. I live in Manhattan. The daytime population (with residents and workers) is close to 3 million these days so, you know, I tend to freak out when I think about how they're gonna evacuate all those people in case of an emergency. My birthday is coming up and I'll be asking my dearest Vincent to buy me this calendar - this is just one of many great illustrations on the theme of Armageddon. I found the calendar on Fab.com, a new ooh la la approved website that you will see mentioned in this blog many times in the future. That is, if there is a future.

To my dear family and friends...mom, my dad, Laura, Joe and Chris...I wish you the merriest, cheeriest, most fabulous Christmas you have had yet. I don't know where I'd be without any of you...I don't want to know. You are all the best and the very reason I love the holidays so.

To KJ and her beautiful family...a truly treasured experience is finally here. A first Christmas with baby son Jack. The joy I know this brings you, makes me tear up just thinking of it.

JP...our new friend at Ooh La La...I am so happy for this chance to renew our friendship...which could never ever get old. After all these years, working together again. Have an amazing NYC holiday season!

Hellooooo Ooh La La faithful! You know me, so you already know the first words out of my mouth are going to be, "I'm so very sorry!!!!". What a busy busy holiday season this has been. Things at work have been nonstop as seems to be the same for home (usually so very quiet). Every single weekend has brought something new and I just haven't had a minute to keep up with you all. My hope is that you folks have been oh so very busy too...I know that you have been ;-) Just 'cause I haven't been posting doesn't mean I haven't been awash in all things ooh la la-y. Shopping has been a blast this year. So much Christmas cuteness out there including this major coup bestowed upon me last week by my dear friend Benita at the U of R Starbucks. I simply mentioned to her that in 2007, due to my health concerns, I totally missed the commemorative ornaments for that year. She quietly found a couple in her stash and I went over the moon with joy! Love the 'bag of coffee' ornament.

Guess what kids...it's that time of year again...time for the beloved Jingle Bell Run. The course may be a little different this year but I suspect it will be the same fun race. Great weather and lots of friends should make this one my best one yet.

I know, I know...you are all sick of hearing my lame excuses for not posting, so I am not even going to try to explain myself. I'm just going to post when I can :) That said, how the heck was everyone's Thanksgiving? Mine was lovely, right down to the very last minutes on Sunday night when I asked Chris where the time went. Well, at least I know I had lots of fun. The highlight was definitely Friday afternoon, when Chris and I, convoyed out with our friends, Kris and Dan to Keymel's to cut down a beautiful Christmas tree. I've had an artificial tree the past couple years but can I tell you...nothing...absolutely nothing, beats an awesome, fresh tree. And the whole experience was such fun. We had a little trouble finding the place but thanks to Dan's persistence, we arrived at Keymel's after a lovely drive out to Walworth, NY. The folks at Keymel's loaded us onto a hay-filled cart and took us out to the trees. It just happened to be a warm 58 degrees, so picking out a tree could not have been more fun.

Here is Chris, with the tree he spotted...a real beauty.

And here I am, still out in the field...guarding my prize :) What a way to kick off the holidays for 2011!

I'm absolutely in love with this alarm clock, designed by Will Vanden Vos. It looks to me like it belongs on the set of Metropolis. Each number falls down on top of the previous one like old train station information boards. The exposed gears are probably not to everyone's taste but, in the right room, this clock will really make a statement sitting by itself on a bedside stand. Gorgeous!

I can't quite wrap my mind around how someone can take a piece of fabric and create magic with it the way Mr. Ackermann does. His creations are nothing less than ethereal.

I remember the first time I was intrigued by a Benetton ad. It was in 1998 and I was living in London. Those ads, having to do with HIV, were controversial at the time and Benetton hasn't slowed down since. Their current ad campaign shows various world leaders, some who wouldn't even be seen in the same room with each other, kissing. This is a reminder to me of how powerful advertising can be when a creative idea is done really well. Whether you appreciate the ads or not, it's hard to deny that they're effectively provocative.

You know what I have love love LOVED from the moment they arrived back on the scene...skinny jeans. Maybe it's because I am a product of the 80's, a time, for those of you who remember, when skinny jeans were also a staple (anyone have a pair of those Guess? jeans with the zipper at the ankle...awesome :) Refinery 29 has a great article solidifying skinny jeans as a wardrobe classic, while also suggesting ways you can wear them all winter long. This look above is my fave. The stripped sweater, the Bass Oxfords, the watch...ooops...maybe I am mad about this because it's kind of exactly what I'm wearing today. Well, anyway, for all of you who doubted the staying power of the skinny jean...shame on you ;-)

Handmade Arcade for the Holiday - Wrap up

As always, my weekend in Pittsburgh was a complete and total blast. So much fun with Laura and the gang. The highlight had to be (finally) getting a chance to go the Handmade Arcade for the Holidays. Held in Pittsburgh's downtown convention center with over 150 vendors, this event was definitely everything I imagined. Sort of like Etsy in real life :) There was lots of amazing stuff to peruse but my 2 favorites were...

When I saw J.Crew's Heart Me Sweater I knew I had found true love....It sounds silly (and overly dramatic, I know!)...but I literally gasped. I've been thinking about it for days and made sure each and every day that it wasn't 'sold out' and finally just now bought the darn sweater---in two colors!

I cannot wait for them to arrive and I swear I'll do a happy dance when I see them!

So, what do you all think of the JCrew Saturday Pant? Everyone knows, I love the concept of the 'weekend' outfit. These look so comfy, yet neat and stylish that they are kind of hard to resist. But I don't know...are they hard to pull off...to much like sweats. I don't think so...I kind of love them. I might choose something to wear on top that covers my booty a bit more than in this look but I have to say, I think they are pretty smashing :)

Minimalist branding

The Dieline has this completely fascinating article on a study done on branding of iconic products and what would happen if you stripped their extremely recognizable logos down to the bare minimum. Check out the pics in the article. What do you think? The Dieline concludes that most work best at the 3rd level ... as a minimalist, I kind of agree. In most cases, you really get a sense that the logo we all know and love is kind of overdone. Think about the Apple logo...you couldn't possibly strip that baby down any more than it is...and wasn't that what Steve Jobs was all about. Super interesting.

If you haven't been in Starbucks in the last 24 hours, you are in for a real treat on your next visit. The store is chock full of holiday goodies (my friend and favorite Strabucks manager Benita gave me a sneak preview a week or so ago) that are so fabulous, you will want everything. I know I do :) My favorite item; the so-called 'Evolution Set' of cup ornaments, complete with this years holiday edition plus the 1971 Heritage Logo, 1992 Green Dot Logo, new 2011 Siren Log. Love!

Hehe...Wegmans makes news in 'The Cut'

You probably aren't going to see Wegmans in the NY Mag. blog The Cut too often but they recently did make news with one of my favorite fashiony sources. Apparently The Cut got wind (from Jezebel) of the fact that the latest edition of Cosmo with cover girl Adele was covered from the neck up...because she is full-figured. What the hell?!? Of course the overreaction machine went into high gear...and of course you know I am going to defend Wegmans which covers each and every edition of Cosmo...not because of the cover photo but because of the text on the mag which draws tons of complaints from parents. Gee, I can't imagine why...don't all parents want their 8 year olds to read 'Sh*t My Guy Says' and the '100 Best Sex Tips'? Frankly, I get sick of reading this stuff when I am standing in line, just trying to buy paper towels. I know Wegmans has been doing this for a while now, because unlike anyone at Jezebel, I've shopped there for 16 years. People (Jezebel, I'm looking at you) get your facts straight before you assume everyone is a misogynistic, anti-feminist loon. Ridiculous.

I really should institute a rule against posting about Kickstarter projects once they've already gained full funding. Instead, I should be focusing on projects that actually need promoting. I can't resist with this one though. From a design perspective, this concept is a-maze-ing. Aaron Rasmussen and Michael T. Astolfi have created a game that has absolutely no visuals. The way you play is by listening. Through the sounds you hear, you can figure out where you're at in the game and find your way around the environment they've created just using your ears. How cool is that?

Man, just too busy this week. What else can I say. I do have just enough time to mention that not only is tomorrow Veteran's Day...not only is it the rarest of numerical occurrences (the date is 11/11/11) .. it is also being recognized as 'Nigel Tufnel Day'. Those of you who have seen This Is Spinal Tap need no explanation. For those of you who haven't, NetFlix it tomorrow and be prepared to see one of the single funniest movies of all time.

Aaaand, I'm off...to PGH. Going to see Laura and the gang and I can hardly wait. We'll be hitting the Handmade Arcade for the Holidays in addition to our other standard shopping fun. Maybe we'll even see some awesome Steelers fans like these :) Have a lovely weekend all!

He launched his DJ business just a few years ago and is soaring into the entrepreneur stratosphere faster than a rocket. The other person is David Title, a video guru friend of mine. Nail Art 101

I just spotted this on the Target fb page and I'm not sure I remember being this excited about a look for nails since I got my first bottle of Chanel Vamp back in the 90's. I've already done a post on how wonderful I think Sally Hansen Nail Strips are but I've always had my reservations about having 10 fingers full of nail art. That's what is so genius about this idea...not only do you tone down the nail art...you can really conserve those nail strips, which ain't cheap. Plus, let's face it...this is fabulous!
