A vote for flats

In the past, I slowly accepted that flats and below-the-knee length skirts are kind of a fashion no-no...until now. Have you noticed how Carla Bruni (ex-model, current first lady of France) is always wearing this look? I totally understand that it can look kind of dowdy but I really think she is doing wonders for this combination (and it helps that she couldn't look dowdy if she tried). Of course, her unwillingness to wear heels might have something to do with the fact that she is taller than Nicolas Sarkozy...but she is certainly making me feel brave enough to try a look I have secretly always liked.

  1. oh! i think i've been a fashion "no"! i actually do wear flats (cause i basically sleep in flats!) with below the knee skirts. not terribly below the knee, but slightly below. does that make sense? i'm short so there are many skirts that normally wouldn't have been a "below-the-knee" skirt but on me....well, you get the point. so i don't always get them altered and just go w/ it. like today... i'm wearing a dark grey cord skirt that's just slightly below the knee.

i also have a secret crush on the sarkozy-bruni couple! he's just such a wacko and she's quite a beauty!

  2. OK, now I know that this is definitely NOT a fashion no-no. If Ms. M is doing it and Carla is doing it, it is a fashion DO! I can't believe I have gone so many years in fear of this look because I once read somewhere that it might not work. How stupid of me?!

  3. i totally know where you were coming from though...because i do know that most mags tell you not to wear below the knee for fearing of looking dowdy...but i think it all depends on the cut of the skirt, the fabric, etc...

i also do love the longer skirt length w/ long boots...

  4. YES! I am such a fan of the longer skirts and boots. For some reason I always think I will get this look wrong because the boot has be just the right length and then the skirt has to be just the right length...when it is right though, it is just smashing!

You are so right too...like every look, there are no rules...everything depends on how you pull it toghether, which you do oh so well.

  6. You are MUCH MUCH too kind. It is really the other way around. Where would I be without you in my fashion life. I am still wearing outfits that totally Kelly inspired.

With you and Laura...who needs Anna Wintour!

  7. I absolutely love this fashion combination, look how cool Carla looks! She just looks so well put together, comfortable and happy in her flats. Kate this would be such a great look for you!! I can't believe you would have avoided it, I think you will look even better than Carla. :-)
