What Your Clothes Say About You

There is a great article in the Harper's Bazaar August '09 issue, titled What Your Clothes Say About You . It's a really interesting read about how we often 'think' we are achieving a certain look, when in reality, the look comes off as something totally different. The whole article is a must read but this is my favorite quote on the nature of change in fashion.

"Even troopers sometimes need to be put out to pasture. Times move on. Contexts change. Fashion historian James Laver had a formula to explain what the passage of time does to clothes. According to Laver, one year after a trend reaches its peak, it looks dowdy; 10 years after, it looks hideous; 20 years on, it's ridiculous; 50 years' distance makes it look quaint. Nowadays a trend can go through the evolutionary cycle in less than 10 years."

  3. Admittedly I don't read it as Bazaar as often as I used to but this issue had some interesting stuff...including an article on all the changes at the Gap. Could be interesting...or not. I can't tell based on the early pics. of the collection.
