Grace & Vogue

I finally got around to watching "The September Issue" and ended up falling in love with Grace Coddington. I know Katie did a lovely post on this doc already, but I just wanted to add a few things I noticed: 1) Ms. Wintour isn't that interesting 2)The folks who work for her (w/ the exception of Ms. Coddington) are quite pitiful--they shake at the mere thought of Anna's wrath! 3)Grace Coddington should get her own documentary! I'm assuming RJ Cutler purposely juxtaposed the two characters...

  1. Oh my gosh, these points you make really hit the nail on the head. I am so glad you got the chance to see this doc because I loved it too and now we can discuss.

I am thinking that sometimes when you make a documentary, you start out with one idea in mind and then another develops. Perhaps that is what happened with the emergence of Grace C. in this piece. She is fascinating and creative and frankly, steals the show. That's not to say that she didn't have an agenda...but still I am not sure I could have sat through 2 hours on Anna W...who frankly was kind of a bore (though I kind of like that too...she is clearly not the stupid Meryl Streep character of "The Devil Wears Prada".

A couple other things I noticed...I expected everyone who worked there to be dressed to the nines all the time and there not...and I just loved those old pics of Grace and Anna in their modeling days...gorgeous!

  2. you know, the parts that i really loved was when anna would go through the test pages on the board....i'm telling you, i think i can do a better job of running vogue....she does seem to make banal decisions...all are highly subjective to her whim that day probably...don't you think?

and i totally agree about how dull everyone really looks there....i kept looking for anna's assistant/secretary (because i've always heard she likes them to wear heels) but i wasn't too impressed w/ the girl answering the phone.

have you seen kell on earth? maybe i'll post about that next....because she dresses pretty boring too.... something about working in fashion but not being fashionably dressed... maybe the two don't go hand in hand! go figure!

  3. You know I haven't watched 'Kell on earth', I think in part because (at least based on the ads...which don't always tell the story) she just looks unnecessarily mean. I get it, that its a demanding profession, with a lot of pressure...blah blah blah...but being a giant bitch for the hell of it is not impressive. You know I am going to watch it now though...cause you do :)

OK and what is it about working in the profession that seems to just tap their interest in looking like anything other than pure hell. I always think its hilarious after these amazing fashion show, that the designer walks out and looks like crap.
